A double-suction centrifugal pump, also known as a horizontal split-case centrifugal pump, is a type of power plant with dual suction and discharge ports. Its operating principle is based on centrifugal force. Liquid enters the pump from both sides of the impeller. The high-speed rotation of the impeller ejects the liquid, creating a low-pressure zone at the center of the impeller. This continuously draws in new liquid, achieving continuous liquid delivery.
How it Works
Dual Suction
Instead of one inlet, the pump has two suction ports, one on each side of the impeller.
Back-to-Back Impellers
In many designs, the liquid drawn from both sides of the impeller converges into a single spiral casing
High Flow Capacity
The dual intake means two single-suction impellers of the same outer diameter are essentially working at the same time, doubling the flow for a given speed and size.
Structural Features
Double-Suction Impeller
The impeller features a symmetrical double-suction design. Fluid enters the center of the impeller from both sides and is ejected by the centrifugal force generated by the impeller's rotation. This design provides a more balanced force distribution on the fluid and reduces axial thrust.
Horizontal Split Case Pump
The pump body is typically a horizontal split case, making it easy to inspect and maintain. Inspections require only opening the pump cover, without disassembling piping or the motor.
Symmetrical Flow Path Design
The symmetrical distribution of the inlet and outlet ensures a short and uniform flow path within the pump, minimizing hydraulic losses.
